Every year, the CAA’s amazing dance companies put on a Benefit Concert to honor and raise money for local families or organizations. It is always such a special night as our dancers use their talents to reach out and make a difference in the world around them. On December 2nd, we are honored to be doing this year's benefit concert for one of our own teachers here at CAA! Our benefit concert will be for Silver Martin.
Silver Martin (Barkes) one of our amazing ballet directors was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Diffuse Large B-Cell NHL). After a year of not feeling well, Silver discovered a mass in her neck which quickly grew in size. A CT Scan and biopsy revealed that it was, in fact cancer. It had also spread to her lungs making it Stage 2. At same time she was diagnosed with cancer, Ryan, Silver’s husband, learned the company he worked for was folding. He was notified that he will no longer have a job. On April 10th Silver began treatment and endured 5 days (4 hours/day) of chemo, every 21 days for 6 rounds. Since her treatment, she has experienced some unexpected hurdles. The cancer found in her lungs and one side of her throat responded well to the R-CHOP. Unfortunately, while there was a reduction in the size of the second (more stubborn) tumor in her neck, Silver noticed that after completing the last round of chemo, it started to grow rapidly. A PET scan confirmed that more treatment is necessary. In September, Silver began a new treatment called CAR T-cell therapy. It is a form of immunotherapy that uses specially altered T cells — a part of the immune system — to fight cancer. The CAR-T cell therapy treatment will be outpatient over the next few months and there can be some severe side effects. In addition, the treatment can cost $500,000. Silver is strong, resilient, and determined. But she is exhausted and NEEDS our love and positivity. Ryan is still out of a job and taking care of Silver. Together with her husband Ryan, their beautiful 7 year old son Will, and our support, they will win this battle with Lymphoma! |
