University Prep
Creative Arts Academy prepares students for success in college through solid technical training in many dance disciplines and excellent performing opportunities in quality concerts, and if desired, competitions. Dancers can audition for companies that encourage them to work toward common goals as part of a team. Great dance training and performing creates great dancers, and maybe even more importantly, great people with values of discipline, creativity, work ethic, expressivity, poise, confidence, and vulnerability.
Besides quality dance instruction, company work, and performances, we also provide other opportunities for the student’s development. These experiences look great on college admissions and scholarship applications, because they truly develop and prepare students in significant and well-rounded ways:
Community Outreach
We have reached out to our community through volunteer teaching of underserved populations, like students at Sunnyvale, a refugee center in Murray; local special needs friends; and in elementary after-school programs in Rose Park. We have also taught through lecture-demonstration performances at local day cares and the library. Our students have been central to thinking up, organizing and carrying out these efforts and have found joy serving through dance.
Benefit Concert
Every year Creative Arts hosts a benefit concert for a local, worthy cause. The students have not only performed in these concerts, but have also been involved searching and identifying needs, publicizing the event, gathering donations, displaying auction and bake sale items, and leading and teaching finale pieces dedicated to the cause. Theses concerts have raised many thousands of dollars.
University Admissions, Scholarship, and Sterling Scholar Audition Prep
Our faculty strive to assist our students in their quest for college admissions and scholarships. We inform them of possibilities and deadlines, and university dance program high school day events. We mentor them as they desire in their applications, essays, and solo choreography for sterling scholar competitions and encourage solid preparation for scholarship auditions. Our students have been successful in their transition to college, and many have won sterling scholar competitions and talent scholarships to top university dance programs.
Black box Performances
We support students in their choreographic efforts by hosting informal black box showings of works-in-progress. Students have choreographed and showcased solos and group works for both competitions and auditions. The black box performance provides a venue for faculty feedback and a chance for the performances to season.
Utah Dance Festival
In conjunction with Utah Dance Education Organization, Creative Arts hosts an annual dance festival for all private Utah dance studios. Studios gather to take classes and have their choreographic works adjudicated by prominent university professors and professional dancers. Our university prep students help organize and host the event, and are invited to present student choreography for professional feedback. This year’s UDF will be held on May 19, 2018.
Teaching Assistantships
If students have an interest in teaching, we mentor them by having them serve as teaching assistants to our esteemed faculty. They learn how to lead a warm-up and locomotor phrases, and they assist with directing the choreography for the concert performance.
Internships
In partnership with the local high schools, several students have completed internships at Creative Arts Academy. These internships happen when they are seniors and complete the CTE credit requirement toward graduation. The student learn valuable skills of running the business end of a large dance studio. Arrangements for this should start in the student’s junior year.
