Every year, the CAA’s amazing dance companies put on a Benefit Concert to honor and raise money for local families or organizations. It is always such a special night as our dancers use their talents to reach out and make a difference in the world around them. On December 10th, we are honored to be doing this year's benefit concert for two of our own dancers here at CAA! Our benefit concert will be for Mia Powell and the DeLaMare family.
Mia Powell was born with a heart defect called Right Aortic Arch with Vascular Ring. This is where the aortic arch hasn't developed correctly and forms a ring around the trachea and esophagus. The ring compresses the trachea and esophagus and makes it difficult to breathe and eat. When Mia was 6 years old she collapsed on a neighbor's lawn trick or treating, which led to her first heart surgery. During that surgery her vocal cords were damaged. Now she is 9 years old and needs to undergo a second surgery to fix her heart. She is currently in Boston undergoing her second surgery, hoping it fixes her heart defect and spares her remaining vocal chord, which if damaged would make eating, drinking, breathing and speaking much more difficult for the rest of her life. She loves dancing and has been dancing at CAA since kindergarten. Her family is so grateful for everyone's love and support during this difficult time.
Rich and Amy DeLaMare along with their 6 kids have been involved at Creative Arts Academy for years. Ava, Elsa and Clare have danced on Dance Ensemble, Elite and Premiere companies for years here at CAA. On September 11, 2019 their 18 year old son, Luke passed away after a valiant battle against Glioblastoma brain cancer. As they were learning ways to pick up the pieces and move forward, Rich was unexpectedly diagnosed with a very rare brain cancer. After the initial testing and removal of the tumor, it showed that there no treatment options. On May 26 of this year, brain cancer took another member of the DeLaMare family and Rich passed away. With gratitude for the incredible support and love they have received, they are picking up the pieces and learning how to move forward.
Our theme this year is "Rise Up Together."
The dancers, families, and community will rise up together and find ways to support each other as well as those in need. Our small acts of kindness and love are compounded when we put our heads together, rally around each other, and find ways to connect and lift each other up.
