BOUNTIFUL, Utah – While holiday concerts will look different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact from one event will be greater than one Utah family ever expected. There’s a special bond between identical twins. Kate and Ellie, both 3 years old, share everything.

“Team twinkles,” said their father, Marcus, with a smile. It will make it that much sweeter when they both share stories of how they beat cancer. “We had a few little rough moments,” said their mother, Megan. “There’s been some harder phases that they went through, and they were definitely hard. But overall, they are doing really well.”

Kate got it first in October 2019. Then, this past March, Ellie was diagnosed with it. Her parents, who didn’t want their last names to be known, said Ellie just had to have what her sister had. “They love to be identical,” said Marcus with a laugh. Having cancer is tough enough. But having it during the COVID-19 pandemic — the family took their other three children out of school and went into isolation.

“Having two little girls that don’t have an immune system and trying to figure out how that works and that’s still a crazy part right now,” said Marcus. Even crazier is when they got a call from a school their children don’t go to, from people they don’t even know, wanting to help. “It’s kind of a learning process to be able to accept other people’s help. You want to feel self-sufficient,” said Marcus.

However, Jana Monson, who runs Creative Arts Academy in Bountiful, said helping a family in need is something her school does every holiday season. So, when she heard about these twins, she knew which family her students were going to help this year.

“Our goal and our mission here is to have the kids use their talents to give back to the community,” said Monson. “Their story just touched our hearts to have two children with cancer.”

The school is hosting a fundraising virtual concert with its students. They’re even doing a silent auction where every penny raised will help Kate and Ellie with their leukemia treatments.

“It’s amazing and it’s a blessing to see how many people have come together to help us,” said Megan. “We can’t thank them enough.” It’s a reminder that people care. And twins, together, can beat anything.“We try to find the good. Because there’s always good if you’re looking for it,” said Megan.

The family said chemotherapy treatments will continue for two years. They’ll have a better answer to how their children are doing in 2022.

Creative Arts Academy
Enrollment: 850, ages 3–18
Faculty: 34

Weekly Classes: 220 in ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, tap, ballroom

Teams: 32 companies across 10 unique tracks, including ballet, competitive, pre-professional, hip hop, collegiate and artistic

Competition: 3–4 conventions, regional ballet competitions

Performance Opportunities: Annual full-length ballet and contemporary concerts, plus an annual charity production - Guest Teachers: Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Kristen Gorski, Liz Imperio

When their studio burned down in 2011, Jana Monson and her husband faced a turning point. "We had to decide, 'Do we close, or do we pick up?'" she says. Ultimately, they pulled together funding with a $750,000 mortgage, savings and insurance payments for construction of a purpose-built 30,000-square-foot building with 11 studios, sprung marley floors, dressing rooms, waiting and homework areas, an office and a teachers' lounge. "It's amazing how much stronger we are," Monson says. "We couldn't have had the success without that trial, because we didn't have the space for it." More importantly, she says, "all the kids in the community realized that you can overcome hard things." Dance and life skills are inseparable at CAA. Monson brings in about 15 guest teachers each year. "It gets the kids connections, and then when we go to conventions, they're familiar with people," she says. "It makes it exciting." In addition to winning top convention prizes, Monson's students have amassed an impressive resumé of corporate commercials, TV roles, modeling jobs and university scholarships. Yet her overriding interest is in cultivating them as people who are ready to go to college, develop professional dance careers and be mature, caring adults. "We do a benefit concert every year for either a local family in financial need or a charity," she says. "The seniors help run it. It really helps them develop leadership skills and gets them ready for college." The benefit has raised more than $120,000 since 2009, and everyone plays a role in fundraising and performing. "Even down to ages 5 and 6, the kids are really getting that mission: 'What else can you do with dance, besides just for yourself?'"

Ballet Production Week Reminders

2/12/2018

Our ballet production is almost here and we could not be more excited!  Our dancers and teachers have worked so hard to prepare for these performances!  We cannot wait to see everyone on stage!

We just wanted to give you a few reminders for this week:
  1. Studio Closure - CAA will be closed Monday, February 12th through Saturday, February 17th for our ballet rehearsals & performances.  NO CLASSES WILL BE HELD THIS WEEK.  This includes ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, hip hop, ballroom, and dance tricks classes.  All of our faculty and staff will be needed at Clearfield High School to help with the ballet. Just as a reminder, all students will have the opportunity to take an unlimited number of makeup classes during our Open Classes Weeks in May!
  2. CAA will be closed on Presidents’ Day on Monday, February 19th.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 20th.
  3. Tickets - Dancers who are performing in the ballet will receive four complimentary tickets and can buy any additional tickets they may need. Tickets are $8 and may purchased with cash or check made out to Creative Arts Academy.  (We cannot charge tickets to your account.)  Tickets will be available at CAA front desk during our regular office hours, at Clearfield High School during dress rehearsals from 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm, and at the door before each performance.
  4. Dress Rehearsals - For those performing in the ballet, please be sure to double-check your dress rehearsals times.  All dress rehearsals are mandatory.  Dancers should arrive 15 minutes early for their rehearsal in costume, with hair slicked straight back in a neat ballet bun and make up done. Just as a reminder, because rehearsals are broken down into acts, dancers may need to wait a while before they perform, or they may be finished early in their assigned time slot.  We want our dancers to look their best, so please be patient with the rehearsal process.
  5. Clearfield High School - Dress rehearsals and performances are at Clearfield High School.  You may park in the main parking lot and enter into the building on the south side.  We will place posters on the appropriate doors.   (Please be sure to avoid parking on the driving range.)  For rehearsals, please go straight into the auditorium and wait until your class is called to perform.
  6. Please Check Emails - We send all information regarding classes, performances, rehearsals, etc. through email.  It is incredibly important that you are checking your email regularly and reading the emails thoroughly.  Please be aware that you can check all past emails in your parent portal.
We want to thank everyone for your incredible support and patience with the move up to Clearfield High School this year.  With Viewmont and Woods Cross under construction, we are so lucky to have any space for our production!  It is such a beautiful facility we know you will love it!  We also want to thank you for your support during President’s Day weekend.  We are at the mercy of the school’s schedule and these were the only dates we were able to secure.  We appreciate your understanding with scheduling and look forward to spending an incredible holiday weekend with our amazing CAA family!

Thanks!

Benefit Concert

12/11/2017

Every year, the CAA’s amazing dance companies put on a Benefit Concert to honor and raise money for local families or organizations.  It is always such a special night as our dancers use their talents to reach out and make a difference in the world around them.  On December 2nd, we are so humbled to be dancing to honor two incredible little girls whose story and spirit have and will continue to change lives – Rosie and Molly Robinson.

Rosie and Molly were born about three months ago as conjoined twins.  Through every moment of their lives, they have defied expectations and inspired everyone around them.  The teams of medical professionals who helped with their birth and who took care of them after felt honored to be in their presence.  The strength, heart, and love these little girls brought into this world truly changed the lives of those who interacted with them.

From the moment of their birth, these two girls were the best of friends – always hugging and kissing each other, holding on to one another through all of the tests and procedures they had the endure in the NICU.  They never let go of each other until a medical emergency made it necessary to separate them.  Tragically, due to this medical emergency, sweet Rosie passed away.  Now Molly is living for herself and for Rosie and is fighting for an amazing future worthy of such brave and heroic little souls!

We hope all our CAA families will join us on December 2nd as our dance companies perform to bring light to Rosie and to bring hope to Molly. In addition to a beautiful performance honoring these two amazing girls, we will be holding a bake sale and silent auction to help with their extraordinary medical costs.  This truly will be an event to remember, changing the lives of everyone who attends.  You won’t want to miss it!
